Title
Volume comprising 17th century accounts, followed by accounts dated 1678/9-1688, and 1707-?1720 and recipes dated 1766-1805
Date
[17th cent]-1805
Description
1) The undated accounts includes sums spent on building materials, wages, food, cloth, farm stock kitchen equipment, furniture, rates, taxes, rents etc.
2) Accounts beginning 1686, may be a continuation of accounts found near the back of the volume beginning in 1680 and continuing to 1685. These are headed 'Foston Estate' and seem to be for a Coz [Cousin] Newton. They are similar to the undated accounts. One page is headed 'Money disbursed for Richard Bate Esq in 1686'. The accounts end in 1688.
3) Accounts of large sums of money laid out for 'cousin Newton' 1678/9-1684, with a reference to the account being sent to Barbados in 1684.
4) Personal accounts of receipts and payments with some household payments 1707-1715.
5) Housekeeping accounts 1719/20-[1720], almost all relating to food purchases.
Recipes are found at the front, in a middle section of the book and at the back. All appear to be in the same hand.
The middle section is headed 'November 1766 Alice Newton's book'. Most of the recipes are undated; the latest date is 1805, and are for cooking, wines, pickling and preserving for medical veterinary and household uses.
Other miscellaneous memoranda, including receipts to 'sister Woolley' from Thomas Yates for money paid, including one payment for board, 1707/8-1711.
