Administrative History | Bert Webster was born in Wensley on 28 February 1909. He started work at a newsagent's shop in Matlock at the age of 13½. After a short spell as a butcher's errand boy, Bert moved in 1928 to a job in Mill Close lead mine near Wensley. The directors of Mill Close mine had interests in gold mines in West Africa and in 1939 Bert Webster left England to take up a post there. He was to remain working in gold mines in West Africa for twenty-five years, returning to Derbyshire on his retirement. Bert Webster died on 17 August 1999 in Matlock |
