Description | 1. June 17 1586 Exchange between Franncis Rodes, Justice of Common Pleas, and Edward Osborne knight, Alderman of the city of London, with Hewett Caborne his son, of lands in the parish of Harthill. Rodes grants a close in Wooddall there called the Narrop, lately divided into 2 parts by a hedge, and now in the tenure of (blank) Barber. The Osbornes grant a close called Berkinhead, in the tenure of Robert Waterhouse gent.

Aug. 6 1579 Sale for 100 marks, from Robert Sitwell of Staveley Netherthorpe to Franncis Rodes, Sergeant at Law, of a messuage in Barlebroughe in the occupation of Robert Southe, a tenement in the occupation of John Ball, and the following lands:- Westwood Close, in occ. of Richard Johnson; 1 a. at Cotton Yate, in occ. of John Ball; 2 a. of arable in the Westfield in occ. of John Ball and Robert South; 1 a. in Dead Furlonge in occ. of Debt. South; 1 r. called The Land at the Gate in occ. of the same; 2 a. at Wickett Yate, ½ a. at Unqued, 1 a. under the hill at Horseley Gappe and ½ a. at Gready Croft Head, all in occ. of John Ball (the last 6 pieces all in the Southfields); ½ a. at Acre Hedge and 1 r. near Myerye Headland, both in occ. of Robert South; 5 r. at Cokeswell and 5 r. at Espewoodes, both in occ. of John Hall (the last 4 in Northfield); ½ a. in the Midfield, in occ. of John Ball; the Storthe (about 3 a.) in occ. of John Ball, Anthonie Profitt and Alice Gill widow; 1 a. at Brode Maple Oke. 3r. at Gredie Croft Steele and ½ a. in Stone Pitt Close, all in occ. of Nycholas Troute; ½ a. in Northefield near Orchard Nooke in occ. of the same and Alice Gill; 2 lands containing ½ a. near Acre Hedge, in occ. of the same Nycholas; 1 a. in Northfield between Ingale Hedge and Person Pece, lately in tenure of Reuf’s Gill deceased. And all other lands in Barlebroughe which he lately purchased of Godfrey Ashton gent. and John Scales.
3. Mar. 5 1574 Sale from Godfrey Ashton gent. of Kelomarshe to Robert Sytwell gent. of Staveley Netherthorpe, of a messuage and lands in Barlebroughe, in the occupation of Margerie Mosland widow.
4. Oct. 7 1574 Sale from Gervis Babyngton of Trinitiy Coll., Cambridge, to Francis Rodes of Staveley Woodthorppe, of all the lands and grounds called Pybleyes, Pibleye Springs and Nicholl Carr,, and all lands now or lately in the several tenure of Thomas Raynnhill, (blank) Marsha widow, Richard Rawlyn, Barnard Stele, Nicholas Ball and Thomas Warde, and all his other lands in the lordship of Barlebroughe; annual rent £25/2/8d.
5. Feb. 12 1584 Bond in 100 marks from Francis Nevile cleric., John Nevile, Esq. of Burton ?, Notts. And Arthur Bo(rn?)an yeoman of the same, to Franncis Rodes; to bind Francis Nevile to pay £20 to Rodes at his mansion house at Woodthorpp and not sue him or his tenant farmers in Barlebrough for tithes.
6. Oct. 21 1570 Bond in 20 marks from John Walton of Harlestrope, yeoman, to Franncis Rodes Esq., to abide by the terms of his deed of same date whereby he granted to Francis a meadow in Harlestroppe called Dovecote ford meadow and Drake Holme.
7. Sept. 18 1584 Grant from Francis Rodes, Sergeant at Law, and John Rodes his son and heir, to Margarett Freshvile, widow of Peter Freshvile Edq., Peter Freshvile his son and heir, and Robert Sytwell gent., Edwarde Kaye Clarke, parson of the Rectory of Staveley, and Thomas Turner and George Savage, yeoman, also to the residue of the inhabitants of Staveley parish, of £40, to be used to the benefit of the town and parish of Staveley, especially the quarter in which Francis dwells. Attached is a specimen type of bond to be taken out by persons borrowing from the stock, also a list of articles as to its use, of which the chief are:- The grant to remain for ever as “Stock of good” to be employed principally for the common benefit of Woodthorppe and the Hagg. Wardens to be appointed to take charge of it. The first Wardens to be the persons name in the deed. Loans to be made only to persons living in Staveley parish, especially the poorer sort, artificers and followers of some trade. Loans to be for 3 years; not more than £10 to be lent to any one person; interest to be employed for the general assessment and charges of Woodthrope and The Hagg, with overplus to be distributed amongst the poor of Staveley parish.
8. June 14 1602 Release from Edmonde Molyneux Esq. of Carlton, Notts, to John Rodes Esq. of Barlebroughe, of all actions, debts etc.
9. Oct. 28 1563 Will of John Rodes of the parish of Worksoppe. He leaves to his wife Dorothie all lands specified in a deed of enfeoffment, and all the goods of John Catlyn dec. which came into his hands. To his son Franncis, goods at his house at Wudthrope, and his “lease and farm” of Workesoppe, also all title to lands leased to him by the late Earl of Shrewsbury. To his wife, his houses in Newgate Lane. Many other beneficiaries, including his servants, and John Thorneley, vicar of Workesoppe. Residue to his sons Franncis and Richard, whom he appoints executors. Proved at York, Dec. 7 1565.
10. May 8 1559 Grant from the Right Hon. Sir Thomas Parrey, Master of the Court of Wards and Liveries, and Robert Keylvey Esq., Surveyor of the same, to Bryan Lasselle gent., son and heir of George Lassells Esq., deceased, of a special livery in the manors and lands which he inherited from his father (died Nov. 22, 1558). Attached is a valuation of the lands, as follows:- Messuage and 4 a. of pasture beside the Towne syde in Storton and Fenton held of the Abbot and brethren of the Monastery of Westminster; annual value £10. 15 a. of pasture called Brickholme Close, 19 a. of pasture called Brestforthe Longe, 29 a. of pasture called Middle Close, 30 a. of pasture called the Intake and a windmill held of the Dean and Chapter of Yorker; annual value £10. 20 a. of pasture called. 20 a. of pasture called Burtlands, 20 a. of pasture called The Bridge, held of Dom. The Abbot and the brethren of Westminister, annual value £6. Manor of Sturton with 30 a. of meadow in the Owtinge, held of the Queen “in capito” and a 20th part of a knight’s fee; annual value £10/10/-. Manor of Gatforthe, with appurtenances, in Gatforthe and Worsope, held of the Earl of Shrewsbury; annual value £20.

14. Dec. 11 1587 Acquittance from John Thornhagh Son, Esq., of Fenton, to Francis Rodes, Justice of Common Pleas, for £200, being first payment of 1000 marks as agreed in settlement of marriage between John Thornhagh (son of above) and Mary, daughter of Francis.
15. May 4 1722 Discharge by Francis Brailsford of agreement made with Sir John Rodes, whereby the latter leased to him a farm in Elmton.
