Date
1913
Description
Mary Joyce Brooke Taylor, Colonel Herbert and Mrs. Brooke Taylor's second and youngest daughter, was born on 15 September 1889. She died on 14 July 1913, at the age of 23. She had spent the afternoon playing lawn tennis at Longstone Grange. In the evening, she retired to bed about 11 p.m. When her mother called in to wish her 'Goodnight', she was horrified to find her daughter lying on the floor, unconcious and clutching a Prayer Book. Although a doctor was called immediately, his services were to no avail. Death occurred shortly after Mrs. Brooke Taylor had first found her daughter unconcious.
As the result of two severe bouts of rheumatic fever as a child, her heart was seriously weakened. As she grew older, the weakness appeared to partially pass, enabling her to take an active part in her interests.
She was educated at Bank House, Bakewell, and subsequently at the Cheltenham Ladies' College. It was here that she wom fame as a hockey player., becoming vice-captain of the Ladies' College team and captaining her house. She later represented Derbyshire at County level.
Upon returning to Bakewell she became involved in the affairs of the Parish. She became a Sunday School teacher connected with the Parish Church. Miss Brooke Taylor also held a busy post as one of the assistant secretaries of the Derbyshire branch of the British Red Cross Society, having charge of enrolments. She was also a member of the local Voluntary Aid Detachment. Later she took to visit the blind in Bakewell. She was also the assistant-secretary of the Students' Association in connection with the university Extension Association, and secretary of the Women's Home Mission, and a visitor at the Bakewell Union in connection with the Brabazon Society
