Administrative History | DERBY DIOCESAN COUNCIL ON SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY The Derby Diocesan Council for Rescue and Preventive Work was formed in 1928. Its aim was to co-ordinate the work of various affiliated groups throughout the county. In 1932 it changed its name to the Derby Diocesan Council for Moral Welfare. According to its 1932 constitution the membership of its council included representatives of the branches, the rural deaneries and various men's and women's organisations. In 1961 it became the Diocesan Council for Social Work and the following year became registered for adoption work. In 1974 it became the Diocesan Council for Social Responsibility (CSR). The Council was a registered charity from 16 Aug 1965 to 27 Jan 2001. Its mission was to "encourage the Church to become aware of the social implications of the gospel and thus foster a spirit of caring and service" and "to promote effective co-operation in meeting the needs of individuals and the community as a whole". The CSR had a dedicated Project Fund, for which funds were raised through special "People's Offering" services. This collection (deposited in Derbyshire record Office in various consignments beginning in 1981) includes records of various associations which were branches of the Council or were affiliated with it.
DERBY AND DERBYSHIRE ASSOCIATION FOR THE HELP AND PROTECTION OF GIRLS The Derby and Derbyshire Association for the Help and Protection of Girls was founded in February 1882 with Mrs Rowland Smith as its President. Originally a non-sectarian association it established a shelter for girls in Bridge Street, Derby for preventative cases, while another branch dealt with rescue cases. Among its early activities were a Clothing club and a Free Servants Registry. In 1943 the shelter moved from Gerald St to 10 Vernon Street later becoming a mother and baby home. It closed in 1958 and the associations income were transferred to the Diocesan Council for Social Responsibility in 1970 with a member of the committee sitting on the Council. The Association also ran a training school at 50 Bridge Street where girls learned domestic skills.
