Administrative History | The Derby and Derbyshire Association for the Help and Protection of Girls was founded in February 1882 with Mrs Rowland Smith as its President. Originally a non-sectarian association it established a shelter for girls in Bridge Street, Derby for preventative cases, while another branch dealt with rescue cases. Among its early activities were a Clothing club and a Free Servants Registry. In 1943 the shelter moved from Gerald St to 10 Vernon Street later becoming a mother and baby home. It closed in 1958 and the associations income were transferred to the Diocesan Council for Social Responsibility in 1970 with a member of the committee sitting on the Council. The Association also ran a training school at 50 Bridge Street where girls learned domestic skills. |
