Administrative History | Records of Ashbourne Trinity Methodist Church, originally the Wesleyan Methodist Church which was the base for the Ashbourne Wesleyan Methodist Circuit. John Wesley preached in Ashbourne in April 1755, and again in March 1772 in the Market Place. A piece of land was purchased in Compton in 1818 and the first Methodist church opened in 1822. A Sunday School was started in 1831 and some years later a day school was built. In 1881 a new church building opened in Church Street, with premises for a day school and a caretaker's house. In 1965 Ashbourne Beulah, formerly Primitive Methodist Church, closed, paving the way for Ashbourne Methodist Church. Major modernisation of the church was completed in 1968 (and again at the turn of the millennium), and in 1980 Gateway Youth Centre opened in the old day school premises. |
