TitleSketch book of John Glover (full reference D3653/30/1)
Date[c1790s]
DescriptionJohn Glover (1767-1849) is known as "the father of Australian landscape painting". He was born at Houghton-on-Hill (Leicestershire), the son of William Glover and his wife Ann (born Ann Bright). He earned a strong reputation as an artist and drawing master and became president of the Old Water Colour Society in 1807. At the age of 64, in 1831, he moved to Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania). He was very active as a painter in his new surroundings and by the time of his death in 1849, Glover had made what would prove to be a lasting contribution to Australian art.

The sketchbook contains no signatures. However, the attribution of the artwork to John Glover was accepted by Derbyshire Museum Service, which transferred the book to Derbyshire Record Office after the closure of the Museum Service in 1992. When originally described on the Derbyshire Record Office catalogue, the book was mistakenly attributed to the historian and publisher Stephen Glover (1794-1869). This error was noted in 2017, and the catalogue entry corrected. The date in this catalogue entry was provisionally changed from c1810 to c1790s, on the advice of Professor David Hansen of the Australian National University.
