Title
John Longsdon at Manchester to James Longsdon
Date
5 Jan 1819
Description
Kind letter of 3 of this month. Will repay James the £21.2s 3d paid for Mr M He wrote to writer on 3 of this month.
On new inclosures thinks most eligible plan for their Father to relinquish his share to James on his undertaking the management of the land and finding all necessary funds, labourers and everything appertaining to business. For some years the culture must necessarily be attended with great labour and expense such as it cannot possibly be worth their Father's while to attend to at his time of life. [72] Indeed such an increase of toil and anxiety would tend to shorten his days. If good to result from the occupation of this land be distant, it is not less certain if well managed. James' province and duty is to cultivate it with patience under any present deprivation of profit and looking cheerfully forward to its probable value in 10 or 15 years. As to requisite funds James must endeavour to procure them. No harm or unpropriety in borrowing money. James may find lenders. At all events ought to raise every farthing without calling on their Father and may do so, writer is persuaded.
These are writer's sentiments. Please read this to their Father to whom he has not yet spoken on matter.
Writer shall be glad to see James in Manchester, thinks he had better arrange to go to Liverpool with writer if he can conveniently go down next week. Writer must go soon, probably 14 or 15th. Worth James' while; expense will be trifling. Writer generally goes one day and return next. Let writer know when to expect him so can make arrangements. As to cow please agree with Hulley for whole job of bringing her and taking back other.
