Administrative HistoryInitially published anonymously, Eikon Basilike purported to be Charles I's meditations and prayers during his imprisonment. It proved very popular and five editions were produced within a fortnight of the Kings execution. While the identity of the author has never been established beyond doubt, it is now generally accepted that it was written by John Gauden and that Gauden's elevation to the bishopric of Exeter in 1662 was a reward for the book
