Title | Bound volumes of letters (1st series) "alphabetical sequence" |
Date | 1806-1837 |
Description | "ABC Sequence"
Sir Robert John Wilmot Horton (1784-1841) was under-secretary of state for War and the Colonies, 1821-1828 and subsequently governor and commander-in-chief of Ceylon, 1831-1837. All the items in this sequence relate to him and reflect his interests in pauper emigration and economic policy, in addition to his governmental duties and his estate administration in Derbyshire.
Limp-bound volumes form the majority of the sequence. The term "ABC Sequence" was in use before the Record Office became involved in the listing of the records-it describes an alphabetical arrangement by correspondent from A to Z. This has been retained in the interim list, but is not necessarily final. Some volumes turn out to contain more draft replies by Wilmot Horton or despatches and material from other parties than letters from the individual concerned. There have been some mistaken attributions prior to binding. In addition, some letters are only present in (contemporary) copy form-the originals are to be found in bound volumes of "Letters from Private Correspondents" (if these survive)
Covering dates of letters, where given in the text, indicate if there is a gap of more than a year between letters. Addresses, where these are given, indicate that most of the letters involved were sent from there |
