Administrative History
John Albert Dunning trained as a works chemist with the Consett Iron Company in County Durham. In 1938 he was appointed shift manager at the Indian Iron & Steel Company's works at Hirapur in Bengal. At that time, it was the second largest plant in the British Empire. Mr Dunning left India in 1948 'because of its unsettled conditions' and returned to England. In May 1951 he became manager of Pinxton Coking Plant, a post he held until closure of the plant in January 1955.
