'John Higgs' Almshouses

Description
By his will of 17th August 1894, Rev John Higgs bequeathed £2000 and his residuary real estate (amounting to £5000) to his two cousins, Thomas and Mary Dakin. Rev Higgs died on 1st August 1895, with his will being proved in the following month.
Mary Dakin died on 21st February 1898 leaving her estate to her brother, Thomas. In his will of 20th November 1914, Thomas bequeathed £1500 to the Vicar and Churchwardens of All Saints Parish for the erection of six almshouses for the poor and aged to be named after John Higgs and situated upon the west end of the close facing Smedley Street (West).
Thomas Dakin also bequeathed Hasker Farm and a house and shop and the adjoining cottage and piece of land, all situated on Matlock Bank. The rents profits were to be used at the discretion of the Vicar and Churchwardens for the support of the inmates of the almshouses.
Thomas died on 3rd February 1916. HaskerFarm, the shop, cottage, and land were sold by the Vicar and Churchwardens. The proceeds of approximately £3910 were handed over to the Charity Commissioners to form the Endowment Fund.
