Administrative History | Buxton Lime Firms Co Ltd (BLF) was formed from an amalgam of 13 quarrying and lime-burning companies around Buxton in 1891. Later, Buxton Lime operated four quarries, three near Buxton and a forth near Colwyn Bay, formerly Denbighshire. Amongst these is the Thatchmarsh Colliery which had been regularly tapping into the Ringinglow Seam since the late-16th century; while extraction at Goyt's Moss Colliery started during the 17th century. Buxton Lime Firms sold the coal in the local domestic market, using the lime burning complex at Grin Hill.
The 1917 acquisition of Buxton Lime Firms Co Ltd by Brunner, Mond & Co Ltd, had allowed the former to retain their name, reflecting BLF’s status in the industry up to that point. The creation of ICI saw BLF become ICI (Lime) Ltd in 1931. The Buxton Lime Firms part of the name was finally discontinued in the mid-1930s. |

Arrangement | At an undetermined time, an attempt was made to physcially re-locate the documents in this collection, probably with the aim of creating an useable catalogue. This was unknown and therefore not consideed at the time that the current catalogue was constructed. Although, the Box numbers in the Previous Number fields match the locations, the contents of the boxes, and therefore the current reference numbers may not always match their locations.
