TitleThe Joseph Hague Educational Trust

DescriptionJoseph Hague was born at Chunal in 1695. As a young boy he began selling small articles such as ribbons and lace. In 1716 he took his trade to London. By 1751, Haguew had set up business witha Samuel Touchett. It was claimed that they had made a profit of between £20,000 and £30,000 out of cotton.
In the 1770s, Hague returned to Derbyshire. He was able to by Park Hall and live the life of a country gentleman. Having supported several local families in their business ventures, he established the Charity School at Whitfield on 1778. Other bequests were added to his will, which became operative upon his death in March 1786. He left £105 to the trustees of Hayfield School. A further £100 was left upon trust to provide one guinea to the Vicar of Glossop for an annual sermon to be preached on August 26th each year, five shillings for the parish clerk and the remainder to repair and clean Hague's vault in Glossop churchyard. A memorial to Hague was erected against the north wall of the chancel. Unfortunately the Church was closed at the end of its days. Following the parishoners petitioning of the Quarter Sessions in 1823, the body of the Church was re-built between 1826 and 1831. Hague's monument could not be restored in the Church as, whilst in storage, it has damaged by a drunken man who had been locked up with it. Furious at this turn of events, Capt. White of Park Hall, re-erected the monument at Hayfield Chapel, where it remains.
