TitleMemorandum to Sir Humphrey Ferrers as 'in commission of peace within this Countie' (Staffordshire) stating that he had not assembled as requested to swear the oaths of supremacy and of the peace, and ordering him to forbear to execute the office of JP 'in this ... Countie' until he brings evidence (of specified sort) that he has taken the oaths, etc.; '... of Nov ...' Damaged but enough text remaining for general import to be clear; four signatories (see below), three signatures remain in full, fourth in part.
Date[1592]
DescriptionThis is presumably consequent on the Privy Council letter of 20 Oct 1592 to the Keeper of the Rolls, Sheriffs of the Counties and others, about JPs not having taken their oaths; the fixing of Sessions of the Peace to require all JPs to take the oaths of supremacy and of the peace; and if any JP does not come to tell him he will have to forbear the exercise of his office until he has taken the oaths (Acts of the Privy Council 1592, pp. 253 ff.) The list of names at the end of this letter includes Sir Humphrey under Warwickshire (p 260); but it would appear he was also a JP in Staffordshire, for the four signatories of this letter asking him not to act as JP 'in this ... Countie' are the four names given under Staffordshire in the lists after the Privy Council letter (p. 259), viz: George Devoreux, Sir John Bowes, Sir Edward Aston and Richard Bagott. Sir Humphrey Ferrers of Tamworth (d 1607) had other connections with Staffordshire; he was a Commissioner of Musters in both Staffordshire and Warwickshire (Acts of Privy Council 1595-6, p. 156; 1596-7, pp. 331, 388), and Bowes, Aston and Bagott were also Commissioners of Musters in Staffordshire. Correspondence of Sir Humphrey Ferrers, 1566-1606, is in British Library MSS Dept. Stowe MS 150, includes a letter from Sir John Bowes to him, 1596 (f 90) and a letter from Sir Edward Aston 1595 (f 85); there are letters of Sir George Devereux in other MSS (e.g. Add MSS 34815, f305: 1578).
