Copies of the will of Samuel Swann of Hurdlow yeoman

Description
To Martha his wife, one half of all his household goods and husbandry ware, and two cows; to son Samuel, all the manor of Lea for his life with remainder in tail male, and for want of issue to his second son Edward in tail male, and for want of issue to his third son Rowland Swann in tail male etc., provided that if his son Samuel should die without male issue but with one or more daughters then he may charge the estate with sums of £600 (for one daughter) or £1200 (if more than one), etc. provided also that any of his sons to whom the premises may descend shall have power to appoint a jointure of £80 a year for his first wife; to Samuel, a messuage and lands in Chelmorton in tail general, and for want of issue to his son Rowland; to son Edward, a messuage and lands at Hurdlow and Black Brook (co. Stafford), and a messuage in Chelmorton; to wife Martha, an annuity of £50 charged upon the manor of Lea, in place of dower; to son Samuel, a silver tankard and 12 new silver spoons; Samuel is to educated and maintained until aged 15 from the profits devised to him, then put forth as an attornies clerk; Edward to be educated a scholar and put to study law; to his three daughters, Martha, Mary, and Grace, £500 each to be invested, and they to be maintained on the interest; to the earl of Rutland, fifty twenty-shilling pieces of gold as a token of his duty to the earl; to his nephew Edward Swann, his godson Rowland Swann, Richard and Mary Nealor, and his godsons William Barker and Jerman Buxton, a 20s piece each; to son Rowland, residue of personal estate, and all his lands in Kniveton called the Horsleys until Rowland is 21, then to his son Samuel upon condition that he pays Rowland £250; wife Martha to be executrix
