Title
Malcom Laing to William Philp Perrin: (with duplicate)
Date
25 Jan 1774
Description
Thinks that Blechynden must be in league with Chriton and Wilkins; Laing has demurred to the bill, and if that fails will appeal; approves of Perrin's plan to purchase an estate in England; advizes against new buildings at Blue Mountain on grounds of cost; the coppersmith Perrin sent out is a good worker but is no plumber, a disadvantage; "Atkyns will make a bad book-keeper - he writes bad and spells worse. The gardener you have sent will be of no use ... you cannot afford to be at such an expence to raise cabbages and greens for your overseers"; proposes taking into cultivation a new estate on Grange Hill; has been rehousing the 'negroes' at Blue Mountain; it is difficult to obtain young 'negroes'; approves of Perrin corresponding directly with his overseers; the new buildings at Vere are nearly complete at a fraction of the cost had the work be done by outside workmen; Dr. Blaw and Nelson, the overseer at Blue Mountain; would welcome some madeira, a mulatto girl named Nancy has been trained as a sempstress by Laing so that she could wait on Perrin had he visited Jamaica; she is loth to return to plantation work, to which she is unfitted.
