Description
This map is described in the Derbyshire Record Society's "A Catalogue of Local Maps of Derbyshire c.1528–1800" (compiled by Harold Nichols, revised by Mary Wiltshire assisted by Susan Woore, published 2012). The description reads as follows:
A survey of the demaines of Mote Hall in Atlow belonging to Thomas Bagshaw gentleman. 1676. Surveyor: Peter Barker of Darley. Scale: 48 poles according to 12 in an inch, in decimals 300 links in an inch. [1:2400] Size: 56 x 54 cm. Materials: ink and paint on parchment. Centred on: SK25486 Notes: decorative coloured 32 point compass rose, cardinal points also given in the margin, top of sheet east. Shows named closes south of Atlow, total 175 acres, with areas and tenants' names, in blocks with distinctive boundary colours: closes nearest Atlow follow rectangular strip pattern: Mote Hall, drawn showing front elevation of three gables, in `Mote Hall Archard', with moat, bridge, barn: Atlow Chapel showing side elevation, with tower and nave roof at two heights: coloured coat of arms: Or a buglehorn sable between three roses proper (Bagshawe of Abney: Maxwell Craven, A Derbyshire Armory, 8, where the arms are illustrated).
