Title
Correspondence from Francis Beresford to William FitzHerbert
Date
1778-1780
Description
including: a report that Mr Jodrill has made a claim on the estate for £36 13s 4d being 55 half-years' palfrey money - the tenants are reluctant to pay (29 October 1779: D239/M/E/4180); - believes Ensor should be allowed a reduction in his rent when he divides and improves the Back Moor (13 November 1779: D239/M/E/4181); - is hardly competent to conduct a suit over the claim for palfrey money, being almost entirely ignorant of the common law (23 November 1779: D239/M/E/4182); - various tenants have grievances, real or exaggerated (3 April 1780: D239/M/E/4183); - is very happy to surrender the stewardship to John Latham; believes that the tenants are justified in their demands for a rent reduction (6 October 1780: D239/M/E/4184); - has at last found a prospective tenant for Edensor's farm, though the landlord must build a farmhouse; there can hardly be a more unpromising time to let a farm for "the extreme dryness of the autumn compels every farmer to dispose of all cattle, sheep, etc. he can, which renders them of very little value" (23 November 1780: D239/M/E/4186); - congratulates FitzHerbert on the birth of his second son (29 November 1780: D239/M/E/4187)
