| Administrative History | Henry Harpur, 5th Baronet (1708-1748), was baptised at St James's Church, Westminster, London, the eldest son of John and Catherine Harpur. He became a boarder at Tamworth Grammar School and then matriculated from Brasenose College, Oxford in 1725. He is believed to have travelled in France. He was married in 1734 at Stapleford, Leicestershire, to Caroline, daughter of John Manners, Duke of Rutland, with whom he had three sons and two daughters (for copy of marriage settlement, see D5955/641). The family kept a house in London: from 1741 at 35 Upper Grosvenor Street. In 1734, Henry Harpur was an unsuccessful candidate for election as a member of Parliament for Derbyshire (see account book at D5054/25/3). He served as Member of Parliament for Worcester from 1744 and then for Tamworth from 1747 until his death a year later. Sir Robert Burdett was executor of Henry Harpur's estate (see accounts at D5054/16/2). Sir Robert Burdett followed Henry Harpur as Member of Parliament for Tamworth; and in 1753 married Caroline, Henry Harpur's widow. Henry Harpur and Caroline Burdett, formerly Harpur, were buried at Calke. There are family portraits at Calke Abbey. |
