| Administrative History | Melbourne was one of the first endowments of the Bishopric of Carlisle when it was founded in the 12th century. In the Middle Ages it provided an alternative and sometimes safer place of residence for the Bishops. From 1628 until 1701 the Coke family leased the Bishop's Palace at Melbourne from the Diocese of Carlisle.
