| Administrative History | 'The Silent Bell of Hathersage', Sheffield Telegraph, 17 Feb 1964: The bells of the 500-year-old parish church at Hathersage, Derbyshire, were silent yesterday following an architect's warning that the six bells, weighing more than three tons, could come crashing from the church tower at any time. Fittings and supports are in a dangerous condition and the parochial church council are considering how to make the bells safe. The Vicar of Hathersage, Canon Francis Fairclough said yesterday: "They will decide on what action to take. We have suspended bell-ringing in view of the report from the firm that inspected them and said they are a danger." Mr Frederick Wardrobe, parochial church council treasurer, said: "I cannot say what is going to happen or how much will have to spent in order to get the bells in order. It is a pity they are silent; they have a very fine peal." |
