Further information: Kitchen was given a 10 per cent for life final disablement assessment in July 1951 and initially submitted for an appeal: 'I still am at a big disadvantage through my grip being impaired, the result being that I am not as efficient at work as I was previous to my accident through having to do jobs with my right hand which I normally did with my left'. Final letters and notes in the file indicate that Kitchen called at the NUM office saying he was back at his old job and wanted to know if Mr Kitts thought it worthwhile to proceed with the appeal. Reply to claimant said: 'In view of the fact that you have already made this appeal I suggest you let it go through' but there is no further documentation.
