Further information: Doctor's letter outlines the history of the claimant's nystagmus which was given an onset date of 15 October 1949, relating it to a squint - 'Booth has, from youth on, been "conditioned" to regard his eyes as abnormal [...] He then developed Miners Nystagmus at an unusually early age and the current "photophobia" he has (said to be a purely psychological condition). Psychological treatment "may conceivably benefit the man." [quotation needs to be checked] Appeal written by Booth's wife started: 'This letter is on behalf of my husband Mr HL Booth who is unable to write this appeal owing to the state of his eyes' and went on to list 9 points for the consideration of the Board, including: 'Unable to take up an occupation equivalent to his former occupation as a coal miner (filler) and he his restricted to a limited number of small paid jobs such as labouring which does not put too much strain upon his eyes. 9. My husband is incapable of enjoying the faculty of life and cannott seek relaxation at the cinema sports or any other entertainment employing the use of his eyes'.
