Further information: From NUM handwritten notes: 'been a miner since leaving school'. Tompkins had a pre-existing gross deformity [direct quote?] of the injured elbow caused by a fracture 'which amounts to a severe disability' (GP note). Injury exacerbated this disability and claimant stated : 'since my accident [...] I have never been able to work at the pit [...] the Unemployment Exchange are unable to find me suitable work owing to this injury'.
