1950

Marital status: Single
Address: 69 Clowne Road, Stanfree, Chesterfield

Further information: Stocks injured himself on 7 January 1949. There was no fracture from the X-ray. It was decided on 30 June 1949 that no loss of faculty resulted from the accident. On appeal dated 15 September 1949 it was decided that the extent of disablement was 20 per cent for 6 months. The notes on the decision state 'This man suffered from infantile paralysis in childhood with consequent wasting and deformity of the leg. The disability from the sprain is prolonged in consequence of this and is sufficient to disable him substantially at the present time.' He began work as a household handyman on 26 October 1949. A medical report dated 16 November 1949 terminated his assessment on the grounds that 'Man's inability to follow old occupation now solely due to weakness left leg and foot caused by old anterior Polio myelitis.' Stocks appealed on 12 January 1950 but the decision was upheld by the tribunal on 17 February 1950. Following this there is paperwork relating to Stocks's case from the Chesterfield Hospital Management Committee and a note dated 22 July 1950 to Stocks's to say that the report has been looked at and 'The report is not what one could call a very strong one' and that there is 'no Appeal against the Medical Appeal Tribunal in a case of this description.'
