| Title | Medical Appeal Tribunal case file for John Smith, aged 45, Coal filler at "B" Winning, relating to an Industrial Accident |
| Date | 1950 |
| Description | Date of birth: 26/08/1905 Marital status: Married Address: 35 Ball Hill, South Normanton Type of injury: Injury - spine Description of accident: While filling coal, a steel prop flew out and struck his back Further information: Accident caused concussion and fractured lumbar vertebra. ENT specialist in October 1950 states: 'The possibility of a psychogenic deafness cannot excluded […] I cannot trace any definite connection between the accident and the deafness, nor can I exclude this possibility'. GP's note dated 12 October 1950 states claimant 'is deaf, following his injury, which has not improved […] a deaf aid will be of no help'. Undated handwritten card from Smith to NUM Derbyshire Area Compensation Agent, Joseph Kitts: 'the Medical Board says they can't find any reactions to my Deafness from my spine but I know deafinet it must be caused by that, as I could hear a pin drop before and now I can't hear a girder drop'. Despite medical evidence of deafness (audiogram included in file) it appears that no allowance was made for the deafness because it was of unkown origin and there was no evidence of head injury at the accident. |
