Title
Medical Appeal Tribunal case file for Clifford White Hawkins, aged 45, Coal cutter chargeman at Morton, relating to an Industrial Accident
Date
1954
Description
Date of birth: 14/03/1909
Marital status: Married
Address: 31 Cemetery Road, Danesmoor
Type of injury: Injuries - chest and abdomen
Description of accident: Crushed by a fall of coal
Further information: Injuries included post traumatic diaphragmatic hernia which required surgery. Breathlessness had been noted in several medical reports and pneumoconiosis was queried in an X-ray report of August 1951. A report from a Consultant Chest Physician in March 1954 stated 'chronic bronchitis' that had been aggravated by the accident and by thoracotomy and a pleural effusion that had occurred. 'I do not believe there is evidence of pneumoconiosis [...] the disability will persist, and in my experience it usually gets worse over the years' recommending antibiotics, plus breathing exercises to restore 'morale and confidence'.
