Further information: Lakin was originally a ripper but a year prior to the accident due to 'nervous debility' had started a surface job. Initial tribunal set for 24 January 1952 when Lakin had been on the waiting list for hernia surgery 1 year 11 months and it was adjourned so he could decide about the operation as this would impact on the loss of faculty assessment. He decided not to go for the operation.
