Further information: 12 letters from claimant in file outlining his difficulties in finding suitable work and financial hardship (wife and 5 children), the last dated 30 June 1953. Kitts final reply (concerning a vacancy on an engine job) says; ' In regard to the point you raise about my promise and me having the power; [...] I have tried my best to keep the promise; as far as the power is concerned, I have only persuasive power [...] In regard to the man hauler engine, [...] it is the Manager's prerogative for the safety of the MIne and the Manager feels it would be unsafe for you to do that job as there are lives involved [...] Mr Gray feels that a man with a leg disability is not a proper person to do that job'. Also correspondence between Harold Heal MP and 'My dear Joe' (Jos. Kitts Esq. JP, Miners Offices, Chesterfield) thanking Kitts for his letter and efforts on behalf of McCullough.
