Further information: The claimant was involved in a colliery accident on 9 April 1951. The decision paperwork states 'The loss of faculty is a nervous disability and it is not likely to be permanent or substantial.' The handwritten notes state 'Frad[?] Acd 5 Killed […] buried 4½ hrs under debris Serious mental strain […] adjourned for specialist report.' A doctor's note dated 13 November 1951 states 'he lost five of his friends [...] he did suffer mental shock [...] In my opinion it would be in this man's best interest if a disability was recognised as this would aid his recovery.' The claimtant's letter of appeal states 'I am afraid as yet to go down the pit.' The Initial Medical Board Report states 'Buried for 2 hours by fall of roof.' He could not walk for 3 months. NUM correspondence dated 5 November 1951 remarks on the claimant's situation, that he 'has 5 little children [...] He is a bag of nerves.' There is a Neurologist's Report dated 17 December 1951.
