Further information: Claim had been based on an 8 per cent disbalement life settlement in 1952. Orthopaedic opinion stated that Beardsley suffered a 'fracture of the lumbar transverse processes in 1950 and a satisfactory recovery has been made […] no further treatment required' and this had been endorsed by the Medical Board. Claimant stated he still had pain and limitations of movement and he was employed by the NCB as a general unskilled labourer on a reduced wage. Mr Swain from NUM reported that Beardsely had tried timber drawing but 'it hurt his spine'
