Further information: Special Hardship Allowance Appeal 13 March 1958 at Chesterfield won. Back injury in 1956 led to a 6 per cent for life assessment. The Medical Officer enquired whether Andrews would now be fit to return to working as a packer, being able to continue working as a dinter - described as 'fairly heavy work' and the reply from a Mr A H Smith (Specialist) stated: 'from a strictly orthopaedic point of view, I could not say that he is unfit for work as a packer, his symptoms of anxiety etc cannot [...] be ignored'. GP letter February 1959 included: 'There is much stiffness in his back and only a small range of movement is possible without causing pain. He is quite unable to stoop sufficiently for low working conditions'.
