| Title | Local Appeal Tribunal case file for John Adkin, aged 59, Miner at Shipley Woodside |
| Date | 1959 |
| Description | Date of birth: Marital status: Married Address: 31 John Street, Ilkeston Type of benefit claimed: Industrial injury benefit Type of injury: Injury - knee Further information: Claimant's accident was reported on 1 September 1958, two weeks after the incident; Adkin stated his own doctor would not issue a certificate to cover that fortnight's period as he had been on paid holiday. Prior to the accident Adkin had been off work with a septic leg; the accident occurred when he slipped on a stone and was followed up at a hospital where X-ray showed arthritic changes. Knee surgery was performed in November 1958 and the appeal was necessary because the causation of the knee injury was in doubt despite Colliery report and a witness account. NUM representative argued that the accident had aggravated a pre-existing condition. One member of the panel dissented from the conclusion. |
