Further information: The claimant fractured his right hand on 5 July 1954 when he trapped his right hand between two lumps of coal and fractured three bones. A Medical Board examined him on 5 March 1955 and considered 'the claimant's disablement was not sufficient to render him unfit for his regular occupation of screen hand.' A doctor's letter dated 22 March 1955 states 'In my opinion he is only fit for light work which does not involve using both hands.' His original occupation was as a Screen Hand - from 27 September 1954 he was a Girder Painter. A tribunal hearing on 28 April 1955 found for the claimant. There is detail on the tribunal report about the type of work the claimant was doing included in the Chairman's notes. He retired in September 1957 but Special Hardship payments continued. It was then disallowed from 24 September 1958. The claimant appealled but the tribunal found against. There is a note on the Report to say 'Retired through bronchitis.'
