Further information: According to the Summary of facts on the Appeal information form dated 17 October 1956, Mr Marshall was injured on 18 May 1954 while working as a packer. He injured his right ankle. In a letter from his Doctor dated 16 October 1956 it is states this was caused by being 'hit by a steel bar at work while he was in a crounching position.' In the report accompanying the Appeal referral, it states he resumed light work on 11 October. The appeal is against a decision not to award Special Hardship Allowance and at the tribunal hearing on 8 November 1956 the tribunal found in favout of Mr Marshall. The proceedings report contains information relating to wages and conditions as a packer i.e. kneeling/squatting. The colliery stated as Woodside No.3 Shipley. Aged 54, Mr Marshall spent 41 years as a miner.
