Further information: According to a letter from Mr Hartropp dated 18th May 1953, his 'book was terminated' on 1st April 1953; he had been receiving Special Hardship Allowance after an accident on 1st January 1951. He was offered a gratuity but 'preferred a life pension which was agreed to.' The Compensation Agent made enquiries to the Ministry and 'the position is that they have been waiting for a reply from the National Coal Board area Office with regard to...wages.' A cheque for £4 6s was received by Mr Hartropp according to a letter dated 23rd May 1953, in which he also requests an interview with the agent. The reply offers an appointment, but states that Mr Hartropp appears to 'have got a little bit mixed up.' There is a detailed breakdown of wages for the end of 1950 (averaging £7 1s 5d). appears that a final payment was made in August 1953. Old occupation: timberer and back ripper. Accident 01/01/1951 in Shipley No. 1. Insurance officer notes: 'erratic attendance, thought by employer to be due to his advancing years'
