Further information: From Insurance officer's submission: 'As the standards of remuneration in the pre-accident and present occupations differed by less than a shilling a week, they are regarded as equivalent'. Letter from NUM to Branch Secretary asking if Maddock was an NUM member or a member of the Deputies' Union. Wages comparison was difficult because Maddock had worked on a Hand filled face, 'we have only one hand filled face working at the present time, all the rest of the faces being mechanised [...] The fillers who were working with Maddock at the time of his accident are now employed on many jobs, ranging from Shotfiring down to Daywage'.
