Date
1960
Description
Date of birth:
Marital status: Widowed
Address: 3 Mill Lane, Grassmoor
Type of benefit claimed:
Type of injury: Not applicable
Further information: The claim was for Death Benefit under the Pneumoconiosis and Byssinosis Benefit scheme, for Bernard Matthews who died 20 February 1959 aged 74. He had been a coal miner (colliery hostler) for 40 years then retired 'on account of chest trouble' at the age of 65 and worked as a shoe repairer. In a post-mortem the pathologist noted the secondary cause of death as 'pneumoconiosis (to be confirmed)'. The Pneumoconiosis Medical Panel concluded death was caused by cardiac failure due to myocardial fibrosis and coronary arteriosclerosis neither being the result of or being accelerated by the 'slight degree' of pneumoconiosis present'. Silicosis also noted as present. Copy of death certificate included in the file.
