Further information: Thorpe suffered from various ailments, including bronchitis, and was deemed incapable of work by his own doctors, who provided him with medical certificates. The Medical Examining Officer noted Thorpe's cough but suggested this was possibly caused by cigarette smoke, and he also noted that Thorpe was a 'little anaemic'. The Insurance Offcier cited the Medical Examining Officer's evidence in his submission to the tribunal, adding that the latter had considered Thorpe 'not incapable of work'. There is no record of the tribunal's final decision.
