Further information: Thomas Eather had been a miner for 38 years. Eather's accident, according to testimony given before the tribunal on 7 December 1950, happened on 5 May 1948. Both of Eather's legs had been 'stretched apart by a conveyor belt which left him with a strain in his right groin'. The tribunal found against Eather at this hearing. An appeal to the Commissioner was allowed but Eather chose to abandon his claim, as he had begun a 'light job', a decision supported by the NUM. In a letter to Eather, dated 23 December 1950, the NUM thanked Eather for letting them know and for the 'Season's Compliments which I reciprocate with the hope that 1951 is a better year than what 1950 has been for you'. |
