Title
Local Appeal Tribunal case file for Thomas Richard Gooch, aged 52, [job not stated] at [colliery not stated]
Date
1952
Description
Date of birth: 25/12/1899
Marital status: Married
Address: Not given, Not given
Type of benefit claimed: Sickness benefit
Type of injury: Sciatica and arthritis
Further information: Evidence obtained at the hearing noted that Gooch had 'been in the mines for 39 years until November 1951 doing a great deal of work in water'. The Gooch's NUM representative described his health as 'worse' than when he first made his claim. In an earlier submission to the tribunal, two Examining Medical Officers described Gooch as 'grossly obese', weighing 18½ stone. The tribunal concluded that Gooch's regular hospital treatment meant that he remained incapable of any work owing to his condition and allowed the appeal. Gooch was entitled to claim sickness benefit from 16 May 1952.
