In an earlier submission to the tribunal, two Examining Medical Officers described Gooch as 'grossly obese', weighing 18½ stone. The tribunal concluded that Gooch's regular hospital treatment meant that he remained incapable of any work owing to his condition and allowed the appeal. Gooch was entitled to claim sickness benefit from 16 May 1952.
