Further information: A back injury in September 1949 led to a diagnosis of prolapsed disc which was operated on in October 1951. Appeal for Special Hardship Allowance against a discontinuation from April 1950 was heard at Local Appeal in Mansfield and the decision was against the claimant. Randle submitted that his circumstances had changed 'because of my injury I am unable to return to my regular occupation and have had to go on a lighter job with less wages' and he expresses the feeling that he had been penalised for having returned to his regular occupation between November 1949 and February 1950 - 'I have not been a man who would ever go on the sick club or compensation unless I was absolutely forced to do so [...] I did my best to keep at work'.
