Further information: Baines's claim for an extension to, and increase of, his Special Hardship Allowance, which had been awarded following his accident on 19 May 1949, was rejected by the Insurance Officer. The case went to a Local Appeal Tribunal on 18 December 1950 but was adjourned so that further medical evidence could obtained. According to the report of the medical examiner, dated 1 February 1951, Baines had been treated for minor injuries at Derby Royal, then 13 weeks after the injury he was found to have a fracture dislocation of the lumbar spine. He returned to light work as belt-worker for four months before suffering a relapse. After medical evidence was submitted the hearing in mid-February at Sutton-in-Ashfield found in his favour.
