Administrative HistoryD'Ewes Coke was the only son of George Coke (1725-1759) of Kirkby Hall, Nottinghamshire, and his wife Elizabether Ellis. He was educated at Repton School and Cambridge. He was ordained in 1770 and held the rectories of Pinxton and South Normanton from 1771 to his death in 1811. He inherited the Brookhill estate from his grandmother, Frances Coke, wife of D'Ewes Coke of Suckley, Worcestershire.

He married Hannah Heywood, daughter of George Heywood of Brimington Hall and they had three sons: D'Ewes Coke (1774-1856), Sir William Coke (1776-1818), and John Coke (d1841). The two eldest sons both entered the legal profession; John was a founder of the Pinxton China factory.
