| Administrative History | Horace John Rylands was born in 1886 in Torquay, the son of Edgar Rylands (born 1857 in Swinton, Yorkshire) a mechanical engineer and former glassworks manager, and Louisa Maria Ryan (born 1857 in Sheffield). Edgar and Louisa married in Cape Town, South Africa, and Horace's sister, Mabel (born c.1884-5) and brother Edgar (born c.1888-9), were both born in Cape Town. According to the 1901 census, Louisa, Mabel, Horace and Edgar jnr were living at 8 Gore Park Road, Eastbourne, Sussex, with Louisa's mother. By the 1911 census Louisa Rylands and her children had moved to Eccleshall, Sheffield. Louisa died in 1916.
Both Horace and his brother Edgar (who died in Sheffield in 1923) became engineers. Horace worked within the Tramway Department at Edgar Allen of Sheffield until 1932, first in the Drawing Office and subsequently in charge of the Point Shop. He married Kate McGillivray at Hathersage parish church in 12 June 1917, by which time he was already serving as a Lieutenant in 16 Machine Gun Company with the British Expeditionary Force in France. Their son, John McGillivray Rylands, was born in 1920.
Horace was a keen horseman, and after the war he taught riding in Fulwood, Sheffield. By 1947, the Rylands were living in Monyash, Bakewell. Kate Rylands died on 25 July 1948, and her ashes were interred at Monyash church. In 1958 he married Dorothy Louise Bennett (1908-2002). Horace John Rylands of Parsonage Croft, Bakewell died on 5 February 1961. |
