Administrative HistoryTurnpike Trusts were created to build and maintain specific sections of road, financed by the collection of tolls. They didn’t always build new roads but often improved sections of old roads. The Trust responsible for the turnpike between Heage and Duffield was set up in 1793, and several members of the Strutt family were trustees before it was wound up in 1880.
