Administrative HistoryThis collection comprises a single volume, which refers by name to Wren Nest Mill in Glossop. However, the range of contents begs the question of whether after initial use at that mill as a day book, between 1824 and 1829, the book was then used for other purposes perhaps at other locations. The appearance, in the clerical/legal entries, of the name Thomas Ellison might be related to the fact that Wren Nest Mill was founded in 1815 by a Thomas Ellison, who sold the mill to his nephew, Francis James Sumner, in 1827. An individual named Thomas Ellison, of Glossop, served as land agent to the Duke of Norfolk: he died in Handsworth, Staffordshire, in 1859 (Derbyshire Courier 7 May 1859; National Probate Calendar 1859); and the 1851 census, (HO107/2014/F164), describes him as "retired conveyancer." So it may be concluded that between 1829 and 1832 this ledger was used in relation to Thomas Ellison's conveyancing practice. The subsequent use of the ledger to record meat accounts remains unexplained.
