TitleThomas Sanders to the Earl of Essex (copy) - 'I received your command of 17 Jan on 28 Jan and resolved to come to you to resign my commission as ordered but that night Sir John Gell, Sir George Gresley and Henry Wigfall confined me to my house where I remain a prisoner - I desire to appeal to you they being not competent judges but partisans - I petition that you order me to come to you - by the hands of my friends I present you with my commission which I resign as requested - I refuse to accept a new one because I will not be under the command of him who desires my ruin more than any Cavalier in England - I will not squander the best regiment of horse in the North of England, as I would do under his command - both officers and soldiers refuse to go under his command - my agreement with him and the committee was that I should dispose of all, he having only the . . . .'
